Alzheimer's Society of BC
The Alzheimer's Society of BC is an organization that I personally support and have a personal interest in. My Mom suffered from this disease and for many years I watched as she travelled through the different stages as the disease progressed. I wanted to do something and my way of giving back is by volunteering my time and efforts in helping organize events, fundraising and bringing more awareness to the disease.
In 2004, I committed to one of the Alzheimer's Society major fund raising events. This event is the "Ascent for Alzheimer's", a climb up to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Each team member committed to raising $10,000 in donations. I am very happy and proud to say I raised $34,000 in donations from the support of my colleagues, family and friends. This was an experience that touched me from the moment I committed to going. The heartwarming stories that people shared with me about their experiences and challenges they went through are cherished. Click here for more information on my climb.
In 2006 I was part of the organizing committee for "The Passions of the Mind" Gala. This was a first in a long time for the Alzheimer's Society to host a gala fund raising event. It was a huge event and very successful.
In 2008, the Alzheimer's Society was selected as one of the few charities to be part of the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge as part of the Scotiabank 1/2 Marathon. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Alzheimer's Society to participate in such a large event and to gather their supporters to participate by running or walking. I was part of the organizing committee and personally raised the highest in donations and as a group we won the 2nd place for the most dollars raised per fundraiser.
In 2009, the Alzheimer's Society again was selected as one of the few charities to be part of the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge. I was involved with the organizing committee, ran the 21kms and I acheived my fundraising goal of $5,000. Again, the Alzheimer's Society came in 2nd overall for the most dollars raised per fundraiser.
In 2010, I volunteered on the organizing committee for the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge and ran the 21kms on a beautiful day in June.
In 2012, this year I was asked to volunteer on a new committee, the Mt Kilimanjaro Grouse Grind event. This event coincides with Mt. Kilimanjaro team in Africa together we work together as the team members in Africa are summitting to the top of Kilimanjaro here locally we have teams challenging themselves up the Grouse Grind. Overall the Society raise $100,000 and I was the top individual fundraiser.
In 2013, this is my 2nd year volunteering in the Mt. Kilimanjar Grouse Grind event..... Heather's Hikers are back to support and fundraise for the Alzheimer's Society of BC. The event is on September 29th and our team goal is to raise $5,000... we are half way there.
